1<\/span> 35 years after declaring independence, it\u2019s clear our country has become a natural disaster.<\/p>\n

We don’t seem to mind that our soil is polluted. We don’t mind that our air is polluted. Now we don’t even mind that our water is polluted. Nightclubs aren’t safe, nor are buses, hospitals, cable cars, construction sites or factory canteens. Even the money we’ve been putting aside for retirement in compulsory private pension funds is no longer safe.<\/p>\n

We’ve been reduced to day-to-day survival, because the parties have turned our country into a catastrophe we obviously can\u2019t deal with.<\/p>\n

2<\/span> No amount of PR can repair what happened in Gostivar, where more than 3,200 people fell ill after drinking water contaminated with shit. The contamination happened under the watch of directors and managers appointed for their party loyalty. These were experts with diplomas who installed pumps to draw water from the River Vardar in an attempt to increase the pressure in the drinking water supply, then forgot about them for 22 days. When they realised they’d contaminated the drinking water with sewage, they tried to cover it up by dumping in excessive amounts of chlorine. They must have been hired under the ethnic employment balancing tool, and ended up balancing the water as well.<\/p>\n

This whole thing shows the calibre of graduates produced by our quasi-universities, where ambitious and loyal party cadres earn master’s and doctoral degrees before landing state jobs. At what grade do they teach that shit isn’t meant to be eaten or drunk? Yet armed with bought diplomas, they convince themselves they’re qualified for whatever director-level post their party manages to bargain for.<\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s the fact that the Gostivar water supply system was built with foreign funding, which is another story altogether. Where did all that money go if the system still can’t provide adequate water pressure?<\/p>\n

So everything has fallen into place. Incompetent party fools, a ruined education system, foreign funding, corruption, an ethnic employment balancing tool… On top of all that, a Prime Minister who insists on talking only about nice things, even on the very day Gostivar Hospital recorded more than 3,000 patients, travelling to inaugurate work on the Dorutovec\u2013Cheloshevo road, a village of just 200 residents. Meanwhile, the Albanian opposition parties, on the very day the scale of the mass water poisoning became clear, reacted by complaining that an illiterate billboard at the entrance to Skopje didn\u2019t feature Albanian. Oh, for heaven’s sake… Is the illness in Gostivar bilingual too?<\/p>\n

To hell with the billboard and bilingualism. All of us, Macedonians, Albanians, everyone already mentioned in the Preamble to the Constitution, and everyone still hoping to be included in it, should be prepared to communicate with our hands and feet if necessary, so long as we can save ourselves from the natural disaster that’s befallen us. Surely it\u2019s not just the idiots who\u2019ve stayed here, along with the bootlickers from the very bottom all the way to the top?<\/p>\n

It’s far too late. The parties have wormed their way into every crack. They’ve seeped into every pore of society. Promise someone a job, throw in a public procurement contract, a seat on a management board, a tender once in a while, a paid long weekend at taxpayers’ expense, pull some strings to get someone a university degree, recognise a bought master’s diploma and a fake foreign-language certificate…<\/p>\n

As a NATO member, we shouldn’t fear foreign terrorist attacks on our critical infrastructure nearly as much as we should fear attacks from within, caused by sheer party incompetence.<\/p>\n

The parties are perfectly happy as long as they have voters willing to drink contaminated water, just as, a few years ago, people obediently drank polluted water from Lake Dojran because the party said it was fine.<\/p>\n

If there were elections tomorrow, they’d vote for them all over again. And once again they\u2019ll wear us down. Just as they wear down the parents of the children killed in the nightclub fire in Kochani. Just as the families of those killed in the Laskarci bus crash in 2019 and the bus tragedy in Bulgaria in 2021. Just as the relatives of those who died in the modular COVID hospital fire in Tetovo in 2021.<\/p>\n

And what about Stajkovci in 2016? Apart from the victims’ families, does anyone in this country still remember the 22 people who died because drainage canals hadn’t been cleared?<\/p>\n

Or Shipkovica in 2015, where four people died in flooding. God knows how many more trees have been felled in the Shara Mountains. How many illegal constructions have been built, how many riverbeds have been filled with rubbish and construction waste?<\/p>\n

We wonder why only a couple of dozen people turned up to protest in Gostivar. But the dreadful truth that knocked us flat after the 63 deaths in Kochani last year is that perhaps the time for protests and uprisings in Macedonia has simply passed.<\/p>\n

Our civic life has been reduced to nothing more than survival. Now it’s every man for himself. Exactly like during a natural disaster.<\/p>\n

3<\/span> I understand why the people of Gostivar haven’t taken to the streets. They’re probably still too weak and dehydrated from the illness. But what I genuinely don’t understand is how none of the healthy people across the country seem bothered that the state is stealing the money they’re paying into the second pension pillar. Especially after the Prime Minister himself admitted future pensioners won’t be happy with the pensions they’ll receive.<\/p>\n

Just ten days ago there was a case of food poisoning in the canteen of a factory in Shtip. The workers announced they would protest with a silent boycott. How exactly will they boycott? Instead of eating in the factory canteen, they’ll simply start bringing food from home.<\/p>\n

It’s like the joke where the Prime Minister gathers the people together and announces: “Starting tomorrow, every single one of you will be hanged here in the town square!” Everyone stays silent until one of the braver souls raises his hand and asks: “Excuse me, but do we have to buy the rope ourselves, or will the trade union provide it?”<\/p>\n

So there’s yet another opportunity to talk about nice things and achievements \u201cas never before\u201d. Instead of grants for self-employment, perhaps the Government should start offering grants for ropes.<\/p>\n

4<\/span> And while we’re at it, perhaps, as good neighbours and NATO allies, we should warn Greece in time to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for natural disasters. Once all those plastic bottles from Gostivar start floating down the River Vardar, they’ll build a dam at the river’s mouth in the Aegean.<\/p>\n

At least then the Thessaloniki Plain will finally be ours.<\/p>\n

5<\/span> We should talk only about nice things. Minister of Foreign Affairs Timcho Mucunski declared that UNESCO’s decision to postpone placing the Ohrid Region on the List of World Heritage in Danger was “a major diplomatic success for our country, achieved through coordinated state action led by Prime Minister Mickoski.”<\/p>\n

UNESCO has given the parties another 5 years to finish destroying Ohrid together. One less thing for them to worry about in future.<\/p>\n

And so, as we mark 35 years of independence, it’s worth noting that UNESCO, too, has played its part in turning Macedonia into a natural disaster.<\/p>\n
